The film the Magnificent Seven was made in 1960, directed by John Sturges, staring Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, James Coburn, Host Buchholz, Robert Vaughn and Brad Dexter as the seven and Eli Wallach as the bad guy. It was of course based on Akira Kurosawa’s film The Seven Samurai, so in a way the film itself was an ‘Alternate Universe’ of the Seven Samurai, and since that film was based on a Chinese legend, it to was an Alternate Universe or AU. Perhaps this is why it worked so well as a TV series and why the fans were able to create so many AUs. As far as I can see no other fandom has anywhere near as many.
ATF
This was the first AU, created by Mog in her story A Birthday in the Present, which can be found at Blackraptor. ATF stands for The Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Team Seven work out of the Denver office. They are the best ATF tactical team in the country. This AU is so popular that some fans, who have never seen the original series, think this was the format of the show - if only that were true.
Little Britches
In this AU, which is known as LB, Vin and JD are children, usually portrayed as 7 and 5 respectively. This AU was created by K Poffenberger in her stories The Train West and In the Arms of Love. This was set in the old west, but today the majority of LB stories are set in the modern world, in a variation of the ATF universe. In addition there are LB stories set in a Dungeons and Dragons universe, a Star Trek universe, a Pirate universe and even a Roman universe. In some LB variations Ezra is also a child.
Other Kid AU’s
There are a number of other universes in which some or all of the seven are children or youths.
Brothers
There are a number of AU’s in which all or most of the seven are bothers, sometimes adults, sometimes children, sometimes a mixture.
Two Blood
In this AU Buck is a shape shifter, able to turn himself into a wolf. The AU was originally set in the old west, but there is now an ATF variation. It’s not as weird as it sounds and Buck makes such a lovable wolf!
RNLI
In which the seven are the mostly volunteer crew of a lifeboat (that’s lifeboat as in a rescue craft, not something you launch when the Titanic is sinking!).
Other AUs
There are dozens of other AUs to explore, such as World War Two, Star Trek, Stargate, Star Wars – bit of a theme there - Las Vegas, Search and Rescue, Dungeons and Dragons – to name but a few.
